Published by Ynnis Éditions, Hommage à Leiji Matsumoto is a 160-page mook (magazine-book hybrid) dedicated to the life, career and works of legendary mangaka Leiji Matsumoto (Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999).
As a lifelong fan of the « Leijiverse », and having had the chance to meet Matsumoto-sensei on a couple of occasions (notably during his visit to France in 2029, where I co-hosted his masterclass at Japan Expo), I was honored to be asked to write this book, although it became a rather bittersweet project. Writing began in September 2022, with the intention of releasing the book in spring 2023, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Matsumoto’s debut. Unfortunately, Matsumoto-sensei passed away in February 2023 at the age of 85, and the book became a posthumous tribute to this wonderful artist and storyteller.
The book’s breathtaking cover was painted by another legendary artist, Alex Alice (Siegfried, Castle in the Stars).
